As (arguably) the best Android smartphone maker Samsung has a lot to live up to and does not want to fall into that rabbit hole where you re-hash out old ideas...... no need to mention names. Thankfully with the S7 Edge Samsung has proven it is keeping on it's toes, building on what is good while improving at the same time. The S7 Edge has everything you liked in the S6 Edge with some fine tuning that has made the design, camera and performance a lot better. TouchWiz has improved but still has some way to go and the 'Edge' usability is still in it's early stages so the S7 Edge is not yet perfected but there are enough improvements to warrant an upgrade from the S6 or S6 Edge and now there is even more reason to move to Samsung than there was before. Samsung can keep it's crown for the moment.... but the competition is hot behind it's heals

The Review

A look at the Smasung Galaxy S7 Edge, what’s new?

Design

When Samsung released the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge it showed us Samsung hadn’t lost it’s touch, remembering looks are just as important as what’s under the hood in today’s market and the S6 family was beautiful. Given the success it’s not surprising Samsung has gone with the same design, with a few little nips and tucks. The S7 Edge has a dual curved edge design, which is slightly different from the S6 Edge, now the back of the phone also has curved edges, like the front, for a more comfortable design to hold in your hand; and it looks great. Samsung has also made the S7 Edge completely flush at the back, finally no annoying camera lens bump, the S7 Edge sits flat on the desk without the aid of a case. The Corning Gorilla Glass 4 front looks just as impressive as when you first met the S6 Edge, maybe even more so as Samsung has given the S7 Edge a bigger 5.5″ screen while packing it into a more compact frame, giving the S7 Edge a neater, less bulky feel. Those curved edges on both sides are joined by a metal rim wrapped around the phone keeping a nice premium feel to the S7 Edge. Even though there are no ugly flaps to cover the charging port Samsung has managed to make the S7 Edge water and dust resistant with an IP68 rating, which means you can use it in the rain or risk watching a film in the bath as if it falls in the S7 Edge will still work. Plenty have enjoyed testing Samsung’s IP68 rating on the S7 & S7 Edge and they have managed to live up to their IP rating. At a glance the S7 Edge may look just like the S6 Edge, but the little improvements Samsung has made make a big difference. This upgrade actually feels like an upgrade, not just a re-release and this is mostly due to the size difference, Samsung has done well increasing the screen size by a lot, but only increasing the phone size a little and it’s thinner, giving an overall better user experience.

Camera

Samsung has been leading the way in smartphone camera’s for a while, especially with the S6 & S6 Edge, arguably the best in the market when the S6 was released and they’ve done it again! With other manufacturers paying more attention to this key feature, like Huawei P9, Samsung has decided to build on what it knows and just like the design, rather than re-inventing the wheel it has built on it’s (already) great camera. Samsung has dropped the megapixel count from 16 to 12 megapixels which may concern you initially, but it shouldn’t, thanks to Samsung’s Duel Pixel technology and f/1.7 aperture lens image quality is just as good, maybe even better than before. Images are crystal clear with plenty of detail, colors are warm, rich and full of life, at a quality I would be happy to use as my main camera. The reduced pixel count has it’s benefits, it allows for faster auto-focus which not only makes for a better user experience but also means you get better shots without too much effort, even in lower light. This is another area Samsung has improved on, thankfully someone has finally stepped up. Ok, low light images will never be as good as ones captured in good light but Samsung’s improved auto-focus and f/1.7 lens means the S7 Edge manages to capture more light, more detail, less noise and overall better low-light pictures. The S7 Edge camera is as feature rich as ever, more than you will ever use and Samsung has added another – Motion Photo which captures a small silent video before each shot when activated, a feature some other manufactures have added however not a favourite of mine, I don’t see the point. If you want to shoot video however, the S7 Edge records UHD 4K video, which looks and sounds fantastic but it will zapp your memory so invest in a micro SC card. Up front you have the 5 Megapixel camera, not much has changed here it still takes great selfies. Samsung has improved on an already impressive camera and is one of the best features the S7 Edge has to offer, remaining (arguably) the best on the market.

Memory

The S7 Edge comes with 32 GB of internal memory which may seem small for a premium level device, especially one as feature rich however Samsung has equipped the S7 Edge with Micro SD slot which can take up to 200 GB additional external memory.

Ecosystem

Samsung has packed the S7 Edge with Exynos 8890 Octa processor, Dual-core 2.15 GHz Kryo & dual-core 1.6 GHz Kryo, Quad-core 2.3 GHz Mongoose + quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A53 and 4 GB RAM. Samsung uses Snapdragon 820 processor in the US but has gone with it’s own  Exynos processor in Europe and it delivers a fast, smooth performance with no lagging or frame drops, even with complex tasks and graphically intense games which you expect with a premium level device. With a solid, strong performance the S7 Edge scores well on paper, scoring better than the Huawei P9 at 122,037 AnTuTu and 6382 Geekbench 3 multi-core score.

Display

The S7 Edge comes with a 5.5″ Dual Edge Super AMOLED, Quad HD, 16 M colour display with 1440 x 2560 resolution. Images are crisp, clear and the smallest detail is extremely sharp, even with the larger 5.5″ display Samsung has managed 534 ppi which is better than the iPhone 6S. Samsung’s AMOLED display is still the best on the market with rich, vibrant colours, deep blacks and clean whites that other display can’t quite meet, even at a premium level.

Ease of Use

The S7 Edge comes with Android 6.0 and similar to other Samsung phones it also has it’s own UI skin TouchWiz. Historically TouchWiz has not been the most user friendly operating system and for some was a reason not to buy a Samsung phone. However, Samsung did not give up on TouchWiz, sticking to their guns they have re-visited, re-vamped and stripped out the operating system skin to a more user friendly and dare I say it … enjoyable experience. It’s not perfect yet, still a little heavy with some apps remaining that you wish you could delete but it’s a big improvement and no longer a reason not to buy a Samsung phone. A nice new addition to TouchWiz is Game Launcher, a new folder where you can organise, stream games and pause notifications while playing, this could be the future of mobile gaming. One area that still needs a little work is the overall performance of TouchWiz, even with a strong processor the S7 Edge stutters at times when opening apps, it’s not a game stopper but something Samsung needs to look at to really compete with standard Android Marshmallow. Samsung has introduced an ‘Always On’ display showing the time, calender or an image, in an attempt to save battery as Samsung says we unlock a phone over 150 times a day which uses extra battery and this feature negates this need. Samsung’s curved edge touchscreen is still somewhat a novel feature however Samsung has made some improvements with short-cuts to apps, your favourite contacts and we are beginning to see some developers look at ‘Edge’ technology like Yahoo’s quick access to news headlines, it has some way to go but thankfully it’s picking up speed as we love the look of an edge display. While Samsung Pay may not yet be ready for Europe, an added reason to look at the S7 and S7 Edge is it’s compatibility with Samsung Gear VR headset, though you have to purchase it separately.

Connectivity

The S7 Edge supports 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and NFC meaning you can stay connected wherever you are.

Battery Life

Samsung has packed the S7 Edge with a non-removable Li-Ion 3600 mAh battery which Samsung says gives you up to 36 hours talk time or up to 19 hours video play. In reality this transpires into a solid days average use with a mixture of phone calls, web browsing and watching video, you will easily get to the end of the day with a little left to spare. Though you will definitely be charging every night given what the S7 Edge can do, the S7 Edge is not a phone for calls alone. If you play graphically intense games the battery will run down a lot quicker though you can use Samsung’s fast charge which will give you about 4 hours battery with a 10 minute charge, you can fully charge the S7 Edge in an hour and half which is quicker than most.

Portability

The S7 Edge weighs a modest 157 g, given the fancy display and impressive hardware this is pretty light. The S7 Edge is very comfortable for one-handed use thanks to it’s compact design and curved edges, it is also quite durable thanks to the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protecting the display and aluminum frame. The S7 Edge is also water resistant with a rating of IP68, though you can’t go swimming with it in your pocket you don’t need to worry about splashes or even an accidental drop into the sink.
