A look at Master & Dynamic on-ear headphones, stylish but how do they sound?
Master & Dynamic designed the MH30 on-ear headphones to be a part of your everyday life, not only are they are extremely stylish but also very durable and quite compact, not to mention the fantastic sound. Built with only the best materials Master & Dynamic has used forged aluminum for the main body and stainless steel components for all high strain areas making the MH30’s very strong. The headband is covered in a heavy grain premium leather which looks great but is also very durable and for comfort Master & Dynamic has used soft lambskin on the headband interior and ear pads which show’s M&D has thought of everything when building the MH30’s – style, durability and comfort. On each ear cup you will find two circular bands which tilt to help the ear-cups sit nicely on your ears and in the center there is a small M&D logo which rounds off the subtly stylish look of the MH30 headphones and adds to the premium feel. The MH30’s come in a number of colour options, I do like the two-toned affect available but we have a black headset and it is beautiful, they look great no matter what you’re wearing.
Ease of Use
M&D MH30 comes with a cable with an inline remote/mic compatible with iOS devices 3Gs or later, iPad, iPod touch (2nd generation or later), iPod classic (120GB, 160GB), and iPod nano (4th generation or later). This cable has an omni-directional mic and will allow you to take hand’s free calls, adjust music volume, flip through tracks and pause music. If you have an Android, Windows device or an older iOS device the inline control/mic will not work but you can use the additional standard cable provided, I also tested the inline control cable with these devices, although the controls do not work you can still listen to music, sound quality is just as good. The cable is detachable with means you can keep the MH30’s on your neck, not hooked up to a device and move about freely when you’re not listening to music, you don’t need to place them in a bag and it’s a nice fashion statement.
The detachable cables provided have a 3.5 mm standard jack which will connect to most music devices and smartphones, however M&D also provides an adapter to allow you to connect with an amp or music system with a larger connection. The inline cable is 1.25 m and standard cable is 2.00 m which means there is plenty of room for movement while listening to music. The cable is woven meaning it should tangle less and wear & tear should be minimal. MH30 also has an input jack on both ear cups which allows you to connect to other MH headphones in a daisy-chain like fashion for conference calls or to allow a number of people listen to the same music device. With each headphone added the volume level will deplete a little but that s to be expected. It is a great feature by M&D though you do need to have other MH headphones by M&D to use this feature.
MH30 weighs only 260 g which is quite light for on-ear headphones making them comfortable to wear but also very portable. With a foldable design the MH30 can fold flat and the ear cups will also fold up into the headband meaning you can easily carry them in the canvas travel bag. This versatility means the MH30 is very portable, fold flat to place in a suitcase or fold into the headband to be more compact for an over the shoulder bag, you can have the MH30 with you anywhere you go. The strong headband tension means the headphones remain securely on your head while walking about the house or on your commute, they are not strong enough to take the headphones with you for a jog, the MH30’s are not built for this type of use.
M&D have built the MH30 with custom 40mm Neodymium high-performance drivers and supra-aural ear coupling which gives a rich, warm sound. The oxygen-free copper 3.5 mm jack also allows for pure sound and reduced noise. The MH30 has a strong dynamic bass and sub-bass but also strong mids which means vocals are clear no matter what type of music you listen to, with no pitchy highs. MH30 produces a well balanced, well rounded sound which suits all genres of music, suiting a wider audience, if you prefer a stronger bass the MH30 is not for you. The closed back design means although the MH30 are not noise cancelling headphones they isolate noise pretty well, louder noises like a busy main street or train engine on your commute home will seep through but for the most part external noises are kept out while you listen to music. Closed back headphones usually sound a little stuffy but not with the MH30’s they have a very natural, warm tone. There is some bleed with the MH30’s so if you have the volume up high the person sitting next to you will hear a little of what you are listening to, if you want to listen to music in the office keep the sound at a normal level and your colleague shouldn’t hear what music you are listening to. The superior build quality also means no matter what volume level you listen to music at there is plenty of detail with no crackling or distortion, resulting in a superior sound quality.
All metals used in the MH30 are anodized or PVD (physical vapor deposition) coated to make them very durable and hard wearing, there is no paint to chip off or plastic to scratch, M&D have designed the MH30 to last for years and still look good. Any audiophile will know the one area that will wear down over time no matter what materials are used is the ear pads, thankfully M&D has made the MH30 ear pads detachable with an easy to use magnetic strip, just pop them off and buy a replacement set, your headphones will feel like new again. The ear pads are also an area where dirt can collect, the detachable feature also means you can easily clean this art of the headphones to keep them feeling and looking new.
The MH30 earpads and inner headband are covered in soft lambskin which is extremely soft to touch so they feel nice against your ears and head. The ear pads are also made with memory foam so although this is the area where pressure is placed to keep the headphones on your head they feel very comfortable as the memory foam absorbs a lot of that pressure. Between the memory foam and light weight design you can wear the MH30’s for hours and they still feel comfortable on your head.
