The Last Word

Marshall know how to make good audio devices and the new Mid Bluetooth headphone is the latest in it's wireless headphone collection. Keeping with the Marshall speaker design the Mid Bluetooth sport the iconic black vinyl and brass look with white Marshall script on the ear-cups so you can make a fashion and audio statement all at once. Not only to they look good but they also have an impressive 30 hour battery life and great wireless connection. Sound quality is good with clear mids and strong bass however it is on par with a mid-level headset, audiophiles will find the highs too flat and balance a little off. That said the Mid Bluetooth headphones are well made with a stylish design and great portable sound quality at this price level.

Design

Marshall is an iconic brand for more than just it’s style, though where headphones are concerned this certainly is one of the main appealing factors. With a design that resembles Marshall’s stellar speakers, Marshall has made headphones that not only appeal to their existing customers but new as well as the design really works. The black vinyl with brass details makes the white signature Marshall script on each ear-cup pop, you immediately recognise the headphones from across the road, which is the pint…….. right. The Mid Bluetooth headphone is an on-ear design which means the cans are large enough to sit on your ears but not so big they cover them completely, it also means the ear-cups are small enough that they can fold away into the headband to make them more portable. The ear-cups are covered in textured plastic which has been upgraded since previous headphones so it feels a bit more premium, the padded headband has the same textured look to it to round off the design. Marshall have added 3D hinges for ergonomic fit, meaning the soft padded ear-cups will twist and bend to fit to your head perfectly. Overall the design is simple and not too different from previous Marshall headphones and that’s not a bad thing as we like Marshall’s look, though the Mid Bluetooth headphones are a little rounder, sleeker with a better finish.

Ease of Use

Mid Bluetooth headphones are compatible with iOS, Android and Windows devices, or any Bluetooth enabled device. Pairing is easy, just enable Bluetooth on the device, switch the headphones on and select pair on the device, once this is done you can connect the headphones to this device at any time, once you are within 30 feet. While listening to music wirelessly you can use the on-ear multidirectional control knob to skip or pause music and to control the volume. The control knob is easy to use pushing up and down for volume or left and right to skip tracks, with a double push rewinding a track or increasing volume quicker. The control know also allows you to take hand’s free calls, when a call comes in just press the control knob and you can answer the call. Marshall Mid Bluetooth headphones also allow you to share your music, when listening wirelessly you can use the free 3.5 mm jack to connect to another Marshall headset so they can listen to the same music, a great feature however you do need another Marshall headset.

Connectivity

Mid Bluetooth connects to any Bluetooth enabled device via Bluetooth aptX, connection is secure once paired with the device with no dropping issues as long as you remain within 30 feet of the device. Marshall also provide a detachable 3.5mm cord so you can listen to music with a wired connection if you wish, or when the battery runs out on your headphones.

Battery

One of Marshall’s shining features of the Mid Bluetooth headphones is it’s battery life, Marshall boasts it will last 30+ hours of playtime before needing a charge and this claim is quite accurate. This impressive battery life means depending on your usage you could get a week out of the Mid Bluetooth headphones before needing a charge.

Portability

While on-ear headphones are not as portable as earbuds, they are not as cumbersome as over-ear headphones and Marshall has added to the headphones portability by making them collapsible. Each ear-cup easily folds up into the headband so you can place the headphones in a bag or backpack easily. Unfortunately Marshall has not provided a carry case which is disappointing for on-ear headphones, it means you need to ensure you don’t have anything sharp or have your keys beside the headphone in your bag to avoid unnecessary scratches.

Sound Quality

Marshall has packed the Mid Bluetooth headphones with custom tuned 40mm dynamic drivers, 10Hz-20kHz frequency response, 32 Ohms Impedance and 95dB SPL sensitivity which they state gives a very robust sound, with a balance of clarity and bass. After listening to a wide variety of music I found that while the highs were loud and clear they did fall flat at times and depending on the genre you listen to the bass may overpower mids so it’s not as clear as I would like. However that said this is not true for all genres, overall the Mid Bluetooth is a good mid-level headphone that will produce solid, rich and powerful tunes that sound great for a wireless headset. However if you are a serious audiophile or want to listen to classical music you will want to look elsewhere.

Durability

While Marshall has used plastic casing to cover the ear-cups they are far from flimsy, Marshall has used premium materials from the plastic casing to the metal arm connecting the headband to the ear-cups so the Mid Bluetooth not only feels high quality but is also quite durable, though I would still prefer a carry case.

Comfort

Marshall has equipped the Mid Bluetooth headphones with 3D hinges that rotate freely to ensure the headphones fit to your head securely and comfortably. In addition to this Marshall has used a plush headband with soft padding to cushion your head and super soft ear-cushions which sit vey comfortably on our ears. The headband tension is tight in fact you could go jogging with the Mid Bluetooth headphones and they will sit securely on your head, while this means the headphones always feel secure it also means when you wear them for a number of hours they will start to pinch your ears.
