A look at the HP Envy 5540 All-in-One printer, a great looking ease to use printer, reinvented with HP’s new Instant Ink subscription service.
The HP Envy 5540 All-in-One printer is designed for home/home office use. While it’s not as small as the DeskJet 3720 AIO printer, with a flatbed scanner HP has managed to keep it quite compact, it won’t take up too much room on your desk and it’s not much taller than a coffee cup. Immediately you will recognise the 5540 AIO as part of the Envy family with it’s sleek design, smooth lines and matte black colour, simple but classic design. The paper tray sits at the front just below the touchscreen display & the flatbed scanner sits on top of the Envy 5540 AIO, just below a matte black lid which sports a shiny black HP logo.
HP designed the 5540 AIO for easy, creative printing with wireless support and an All-in-One design that prints, scans and copies, it also does photo and borderless printing, what more could you want for home printing. HP has teamed the 5540 AIO with Instant Ink, HP’s subscription service that automatically re-orders ink for you to save you time and money, but we’ll look at that more later. HP’s simple, compact All-in-One design means you can place the Envy 5540 AIO in your home office or side table and enjoy easy printing daily.
The Envy 5540 AIO comes with 128 MB DDR3 memory, which is more than enough to support the processor and any wireless printing or copying/scanning.
The Envy 5540 AIO is a HP Thermal Inkjet printer that comes with HP PCL 3 GUI and 525 MHz processor. The 5540 can print black up to 1200 x 1200 rendered dpi & colour up to 4800 x 1200 optimised dpi. Copy resolution with black text is 300 x 300 dpi and with colour text and graphics is 600 x 600 dpi. The 5540 AIO can also scan 64 bit optical, 1200 dpi resolution. In reality what this means is the Envy 5540 AIO is on par with other inkjet MFP printers, good quality printing for home/home office use, text is crisp and clear, as long as you don’t go too small and images are rich and vibrant with plenty of detail. What’s surprisingly good is photo printing, if you print on an A4 page the quality is excellent with rich colours and very little noise and it’s even better on photo quality paper, it may take a little longer to print than standard printing but it’s worth the wait.
Speaking of speed, HP states the first page will print out as fast as 19 seconds for black & white printing or 22 seconds for colour printing. HP also state the Envy 5540 AIO can print up to 22 pages per minute in black & white ‘draft’ or 12 ppm ISO; and for colour printing up to 21 ppm draft or 8 ppm ISO. While all of this sounds impressive, and it is, remember this is not an office printer and therefore will not be lightening fast, that said I found HP’s claims to be quite accurate until you look at printing higher quality colour images and photo quality printing, but I would expect that to take a tad longer.
The Envy 5540 AIO comes with a 5.5 cm (2.2”) Touchscreen Mono LCD display. The display now sits in the centre of the front panel, which I like, rather than to the left of the panel like previous Envy printers. The monochrome display is simple and easy to use, there’s not much to it which means you easily work out which icon you select to print, scan etc. Some may prefer fancy colour display with excessive detail but this would not only take up more room but it would also cost more, and would frankly look a bit odd on such a compact machine, the monochrome display works here.
Ease of Use
The Envy 5540 AIO is compatible with Windows and OS X, to view minimum system requirements take a look at the Envy 5540 AIO @HP. You can connect the Envy 5540 AIO directly to your PC/laptop via USB connection, the 5540 AIO also supports wireless direct printing, HP ePrint, Apple AirPrint and is Mopria certified. HP wants you to print anything you want from anywhere you want, the wireless support means you do not need to be near the 5540 AIO in order to print, you can send your request directly from another room and the AIO will print away. You can also manage printing tasks and scan from your mobile device with HP’s All-in-One Printer Remote mobile application that you can download for free. The beauty of an All-in-One printer means you can also copy or scan documents or print direct from the web.
The Envy 5540 AIO also prints photo quality images and the quality is superb, the built-in photo tray lets you print 10 x 15 cm photos without changing paper which is great for printing remotely. You can also print a borderless image up to 216 x 297 mm, meaning you can do a lot more than print your next schedule or boarding pass, HP designed the 5540 AIO to fulfil all your printing needs. While the Envy 5540 AIO is a little larger than one of HP’s DeskJet printers it needs to be bigger to house the flatbed scanner, something most home office users prefer to have. You can also scan file format PDF, BMP, JPG, GIF, TIF & PNG with the Envy 5540 AIO.
HP Instant Ink – This particular printer comes with HP’s Instant Ink, a subscription service that allows you to save up to 70% on ink and means you never run out as the printer will order the ink for you when you need it. HP states that Instant Ink “uses technology to simplify printing, saving you time and money, making life a little easier along the way”. Whether you are printing in black & white or colour the cost is the same with your monthly plan price, the printer will simply order the ink when it’s needed and it will get delivered directly to your door. There is no annual fee, you can change or cancel plans online anytime without penalty, which is a great plus in our book. View full details of the HP Instant Ink service. Check out our press release
Connect to the Envy 5540 AIO via USB 2.0 or through wireless support – Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n. Unfortunately the 5540 AIO does not have a second USB port or SD slot to allow you to print from a flash drive or additional memory card, something HP should include in the next update to the Envy AIO printer.
The Envy 5540 AIO is powered with an input voltage of 100 to 240 VAC, (+/- 10%), 50/60 Hz (+/- 3 Hz) and consumes 13.95 watts while printing, 3.60 watts on standby, 0.93 watts while asleep and 0.20 watts when off. Given that it’s not a full sized office printer you would expect the power consumption to be low, though it is a little more than a DeskJet printer but still modest.
As I mentioned earlier the Envy 5540 AIO takes up a little more room than HP’s DeskJet thanks to it’s flatbed scanner, however HP has kept the AIO quite compact in fact it’s exact size is 454 x 503 x 156 mm. You can easily fit the 5540 AIO on your home office desk or on a side table in your house and it won’t take up much room at all, it’s about twice as wide as an A4 sheet and a tad longer.
