The Last Word

Bang & Olufsen have packed their renowned style and superior sound quality in to a set of in-ear headphones. Just like the original H3 earphones the newest edition doesn't disappoint and now Bang & Olufsen has added Active Noise Cancellation into the mix. The new H3 ANC earphones look just as stylish and have kept the well balanced sound we loved from the original H3 with no compromise to sound quality, even with noise cancellation turned on. Some may find the bass a little lacking but if a well balanced, natural sound is what you are looking for these could be the headphones for you. You will pay a price for the Bang & Olufsen brand but if that's not a worry the new Beoplay H3 ANC earphones are definitely worth a listen.

The Review

A look at Bang & Olufsen Beoplay H3 ANC headphones……. earbuds with noise cancellation???

Design

Bang & Olufsen are not only known for their superb sound quality but also high end design that is sure to catch the eye and it’s great to see they have not made any exceptions even when it comes to small, in-ear headphones. The Beoplay H3 ANC headphones are small, ultra light weight earbuds that sit snugly in your ear with just the slightest hint of branding on show, the iconic B&O logo etched into the earbud  cover is delicate but noticeable. The stainless steel earbuds are hairline brushed on top and the sides have a pearl blasted finish which gives an illusion of extra depth when in fact the in-ear headphones are small and compact. With such a small canvas the Active Noise Cancellation doesn’t sit in the earphones like you would see with larger headphones, instead it sits in a separate ANC disc attached to the cable just above the 3.5 mm jack, clever positioning to allow you place the disc in your pocket or bag with your music device. Bang & Olufsen have steered away from bright colours, in fact there is only one colour option for the Beoplay H3 ANC headphones, gunmetal grey and we love it. The elegant design is not too different from the original H3 design, aside from the ANC disc you wouldn’t know by looking at them, which just goes to show the H3 ANC earphones will still look great in years to come.

Ease of Use

Bang & Olufsen has given the Beoplay H3 ANC earphones come with an in-line remote which is optimised for iOS, though will work ok with Android and Windows. This along with the MicroElectrical-Mechanical System microphone means you can take hand’s free calls without needing to touch your phone, it also means you can skip tracks and adjust the volume, again without touching your music device.

Connectivity

The Beoplay H3 ANC headphones come with a 1.35 m cable with 3.5 mm mini-jack connection and 0.25m USB to Micro USB. The cable is long enough to easily place your music device in a bag or backpack and comfortably listen to music. The cable is also designed to work independently from the Active Noise Cancellation, meaning even if the ANC disc runs out of battery you can continue to listen as regular earphones.

Battery

The Active Noise Cancellation disc comes with a rechargeable Lithium-Ion 350 mAh battery, which Bang & Olufsen states gives you up to 20 hours listening time with ANC. This statement is quite accurate and impressive as the ANC disc is thin and light, relatively unnoticeable when in your pocket. When you do run out of battery you can continue to listen to music without ANC and you can fully recharge the H3 ANC in approximately 2.5 hours.

Portability

Even though the Beoplay H3 ANC earphones have a stainless steel case it is extremely lightweight, in fact the earbuds weigh a mere 40 grams, meaning once they are in your ears you barely notice the earbuds at all. Bang & Olufsen have also included a soft carry pouch to protect the H3 earphones with ANC disc while you’re not using them, small enough to place in a handbag or small backpack easily and carry with you.

Sound Quality

Bang & Olufsen have equipped the H3 ANC headphones with an electro-dynamic 10.8 mm driver, with 20 – 16,000 Hz for precision acoustics stating there is no compromise on sound quality in this compact design. With 29 precision holes in the earbud case Bang & Olufsen have allowed for a more open, natural sound. The Beoplay H3 ANC has clear mids and crisp highs with a good rounded bass for a well balanced sound that will suit all genre’s of music. That said some may find the bass a little lacking, it holds it’s own but is by no means overpowering……. which may be what you’re looking for. The well balanced sound may feel like it’s lacking a little punch depending on what you’re listening to but if you like a wide range of music it’s worth the compromise. With the Active Noise Cancellation turned on Bang & Olufsen has managed a good balance between sound, noise and silence, I was surprised how well the ANC worked with in-ear headphones without compromising sound quality.

Noise Cancellation

Bang & Olufsen have included Active Noise Cancellation with the updated H3 in-ear headphones, while this is a feature you usually see with on-ear or over-ear headphones it’s a nice extra to see in smaller earphones. Bang & Olufsen state they provide exceptional noise isolation using feed-forward technology, what this breaks down to is the earbuds register external noises and minimise the impact on your listening experience. As you can imagine you do not get full noise isolation like with over-ear headphones but the Beoplay H3 ANC earphones do a very good job minimising the impact of most external noises. You can listen to your favourite tunes without too much distraction and even enjoy some silence between sets. The memory foam ear-tips help you get the most out of the ANC technology as they are a more snug fit.

Durability

The stainless steel casing means the earbuds are quite robust  and relatively scratch resistant, meaning the earphones should last a long time, though you should use the carry pouch provided to store the earphones to keep that hairbrush finish looking smart.

Comfort

Bang & Olufsen have designed the Beoplay H3 ANC earphones to be a near perfect fit for everyone. In the box you will get a set of memory foam ear tips which fit snugly in your ears, however if you prefer silicone ear-tips Bang & Olufsen also give silicone ear-tips in four different sizes meaning no matter what your preference or ear size you should find a comfortable fit.

B&O BeoPlay H3 ANC
Convincing a bunch of consumers to buy a pair of in-ear headphones sounds simple on paper. The headphones must be capable of producing great sound for the asking price while being very comfortable to wear too. Plenty of products fit that description but a good number of consumers care about branding as well. Bang & […]
