The Last Word

The Asus Zen AiO Pro is a stylish All-in-One desktop backed up with a stunning 4K display and strong performance. While it may not be the most prestigious AiO on the market, Asus has firmly placed the Z240IC as a high-end All-in-One desktop at a reasonable price. You can enjoy an impressive touchscreen display, motion controls with a RealSense camera as well as Windows Hello. Unfortunately the keyboard and mouse feel a little more budget than high-end and the Asus audio falls into the same category, crackling when you turn up the volume. That said these are small prices to pay for a stylish, powerful All-in-One at a reasonable price. If you are looking for an All-in-One that's stylish and performs well but don't want to pay top dollar, the Asus Zen AiO Pro is worth a look, with many configurations you can find the one for you.

The Review

A look at the Asus Zen AiO Pro Z240IC, it has a 4K display but what else does it have to offer?

Design

Asus state their ‘Zen’ range is designed to “…..capture such ancient wisdom and translate it to modern day breakthroughs so you would never again struggle to juggle between the fine balancing act of life” and the Zen AiO Pro embraces this philosophy completely. The All-in-One desktop packs processing power and an impressive 4K display into one stylish design, no need to find a place for a stand alone tower, the Zen AiO Pro  has a small footprint taking up no more room than a standard monitor. The Zen AiO Pro is anything but standard however, it is beautifully precision-crafted from solid aluminium, with a Zen-inspired spun-metal finish in Icicle Gold. The brushed metal finish accentuates the curved back, lending to very smooth lines with diamond-cut edges for premium, high-end look and feel. With the Asus logo etched into the curved back and placed below the display you won’t easily forget which brand has made this luxurious All-in-One desktop…… even though it does resemble the iMac in many ways. While some AiO desktops are lumbered with a chunky stand, Asus has packed all it’s processing power into the stunning curved back display allowing for a seamlessly-integrated stand. The slender L-shaped stand looks impressive and adds to the high-end feel, however the design does mean the display can only be angled back and forth, you cannot adjust the height. Overall the All-in-One design is sleek, modern with smooth lines, sharp edges and a delightful brushed metal finish that embodies the Zen spirit.

Camera

The Z240IC comes with an Intel RealSense camera with 3D facial recognition. As usual the camera can be used for on-line gaming and web calls, quality is good with plenty of detail. However, the RealSense camera also allows you to use gesture controls for some on-line gaming and applications, unfortunately the number of games and apps ready for this technology is limited at present. The RealSense camera also allows you to log in via Windows Hello, using facial recognition rather than a password or fingerprint.

Memory

This particular model came with 16 GB DDR4 at 2133MHz and 1TB Hard Drive SSD 128GB which is more than enough memory to support the Intel i7 processor and plenty of storage, enough even for heavier users though it will cost you extra. As with all Asus products you also have the added benefit of ASUS WebStorage, the Zen AiO Pro comes with additional 100 GB WebStorage included, therefore depending on your needs to can buy the All-in-One with less on-board storage and use the Asus WebStorage when needed.

Ecosystem

The Zen AiO Pro Z240IC comes with a 6th Gen quad core Intel Core i7 processor, Intel H170 chipset 2.8 GHz / 3.6 GHz with Turbo Boost 8 MB cache. As mentioned above the All-in-One comes in a wide range of storage options and your choice will have an affect on the processor’s delivery and output. Our particular model proved to be very snappy, booting up very quickly and launching applications with no lag at all. Standard daily tasks run very smoothly like web browsing, document editing and even video and image editing. The Zen AiO Pro can multi-task with ease, I had multiple tabs and applications open for long periods and the Z240IC processor continued to perform under pressure. Yes the All-in-One does not produce the same level of power as a full desktop, that said it’s strong performance will be sufficient for most users. Though the Z240IC is not a gaming desktop the i7 processor with NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M graphics card with 4 GB GDDR5 dedicated memory means the Zen AiO Pro handles most games well, even the latest graphically intense games. That said you cannot enjoy the 4K display while gaming if you want a solid performance, adjust the settings down and the Z240IC will support gaming with no noticeable lag or frame drops, a compromise but worth it to play games on this stylish All-in-One.

Display

The Zen AiO Pro comes with a 23.8″, 16:9 ratio, Wide Screen, Ultra HD, 4K, IPS, LED backlit display with 3840 x 2160 resolution, 185 ppi. What this breaks down to is a crisp, clear, stunning 4K display with plenty of detail. It’s not the brightest screen on the market and it’s colour gamut is not the best available however colours are rich, warm and vibrant with deep blacks and clean whites. Images look great and you will enjoy watching videos on YouTube or streaming films online. With 178° viewing angles the Z240IC will also allow you to view presentations with colleagues and view videos with friends with ease. Aside from looking fantastic the Zen AiO Pro display is a 10-point multi-touch display so you can flick through pages and zoom in on images easily.

Ease of Use

Asus has packed the Zen AiO Pro with Windows 10 Home so you can enjoy cross device activity with any of your Windows 10 devices. The All-in-One comes with ASUS SonicMaster Premium audio with a 6 speaker stereo configuration, while this sounds impressive you will notice some crackling if you play music at full volume. At normal levels the audio sounds good with strong bass, however given the audio quality you can get with some desktops it is a little disappointing. Speaking of volume you will hear the fan kick in when you boot up the Zen AiO Pro and stays on while the desktop is on, the noise is audible but not too loud. While you have the touchscreen and RealSense camera to operate the All-in-One, it also comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse as standard. Unfortunately the keyboard and mouse do not have the same high-end feel as the desktop, they feel more like a budget keyboard and mouse. That said the mouse is lightweight and the keyboard has good travel, both are comfortable to use for hours on end. Asus has packed the Z240IC with twin array microphones which means you can also use Cortana, if you are used to Microsoft devices you will enjoy using Cortana to assist with work.

Connectivity

The Z240IC supports WiFi, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth V4.0, 10/100/1000/Gigabits Mbps. The All-in-One comes with an array of ports, USB 3.1, 4 USB 3.1, USB 2.0, 2 HDMI-Out and a 2 -in-1: SD/ MMC. Unfortunately all of the ports are at the back, while this keeps things tidy and looking great from the front it does mean you have to reach around the back anytime you want to switch connections. You also need to use one of the USB ports for the wireless keyboard and mouse dongle.

Power & Battery

The Zen AiO Pro uses a 180 Watt Power adaptor, power cables again are at the back to keep things tidy. Power consumption is average for this level of desktop.

Footprint

One of the benefits of an All-in-One is a small footprint in comparison to standard desktops. The Z240IC covers a mere 585 x 434 x 52 ~190 mm, not much more than a standard monitor and you don’t need to worry about a tower at your feet, which means not only does it look good but also means you can enjoy more workspace. The AiO also only weighs 7.3 kg meaning you can move the Z240IC around your office or at home with ease.
